My Report

Here is my report:
Miccosukee Written Report
By: Grace Anderson

Miccosukee means “People whom the Sun God does not love.” The tribe lived in Alabama and Georgia before reaching Florida. When the tribe reached Florida, they lived in the Everglades.
The Miccosukee tribe lives in modern housing and they also have lots of chikees, which are open-sided covered by palmetto-thatch roofs. Some chikees are made out of wood and plaster. They raised the floor two or three feet off the ground because it protected their homes from flooding and swamp animals.
The foods they ate were deer, wild turkey, rabbits, turtles, soups, cornbread, corn, beans, fish, and squash. Miccosukees were good farmers so they ate lots of vegetables.
A natural resource they used from their area is the palmetto because they use it to build chikees, make clothing, and make baskets. They used wood for fire and woodcarvings.

The Miccosukee men had their head shaved and wore breechcloths. The women wore a wrap around skirts woven from palmetto fiber and for their feet, they used moccasins. Some of the women wore the traditional Miccosukee dress and the Sioux. The Miccosukees wore elaborate tribal tattoos, but rarely painted their faces. The ladies wore pompadours or tightly twisted topknot.
A fun thing for Miccosukees to do for recreation was making baskets, beadwork, patchwork designs, beaded dolls, play lacrosse, and for children to go hunting with their fathers. One of the most fun things to do was storytelling.
Miccosukee hunters used bows and arrows for their tools. Fisherman used fishing spears. In war, the men used their bows or tomahawks and lances.
Right now Miccosukees speak mostly English. The Miccosukees spoke Mikasuki, which now is an endangered language because rarely anyone speaks it anymore. To contact other tribes they used a language called “Mobilian Jargon”.
One of their religious beliefs is that if you eat corn or deer before storytelling you must not touch the food for two weeks. Another belief is that if you turn around and you see an eagle over your shoulder your neck will turn stiff for good. In celebrations the tribe does the Green Corn Dance.
There were about six hundred Miccosukee Indians prior to the European arrival. When the Europeans arrived, they wanted to take the Miccosukee land so there was a war and the population of the Miccosukees went down.
The biggest enemies to them were the Europeans because they were trying to steal their land. The Creeks and Miccosukees formed a strong, powerful Seminole tribe. Together they formed an alliance fight against the Europeans who were trying to take their land.
The Miccosukees have reservations. Most of the Miccosukees live on the Seminole reservation in Oklahoma and Florida. They also live in apartments and modern homes, and they also still live in chikees.
The Medicine Men hunted for what they needed, but no more. They studied the earth and the stars for many years. The women and mothers cooked, cleaned, farmed, and took care of the young children. The fathers hunted, fished, took care of their sons, and fought in wars. The children played, went to school, listen to storytelling, sometimes cooked, the boys would hunt and fish their fathers, and the girls would help with their mothers’ duties. Buffalo Tiger was the chief and chairman of the Miccosukee tribe. He was in charge of the Miccosukee government, schools, and homes.
